Kiting Guide

What is kiting?

It general means to drag along an enemy by attacking it with ranged spells or weapons.
Sometimes, a player pulls a monster that can cause serious damage into a city to see it fight city guards for fun, or pull away a deadly monster to allow time for teammates to kill other.

Fundamentally, kiting has to points: Do not lose aggro and do not receive attack too much.

This kiting guide is just for PW wizard or mage, besides the 2 general points, do enough damage output is the third point here ^_^

Kiting Progress

1. Pick your target

Click on your intended target to see its attributes.

  • Magic resistance: hard to kill, pick another target
  • Hit points enhanced: harder than usual to kill but usually not worth the trouble IMHO.
  • Movement speed enhanced: Makes it a bit more likely that it will manage to get close enough to hit you before you can kill it, not recommended.
  • Attack enhanced, magic enhanced: Since they won't hit you most of the time, valid target.
  • Defense enhanced: Free extra XP, good target.
  • Life risking attack: half HP means fast kill, good target. You will kill it twice as fast because of half HP, but they will do double damage to you when they hit you, so be careful.
  • Weaken: If you are hunting for XP or drops, you should avoid this one since it gives less of both. On the other hand, it still counts as a kill toward quest even if it is easier.

2. Adjust your defenses

Most of the time, it won't hit you so that should not matter. Maybe I lack practise, but I tend to get hit once every 2 or 3 kills, especially against ranged attacker. Still, it is a good idea to minimize the damage you would get, just in case.

stone barrier: Good against physical attacks because it gives some extra physical defense or earth magical attacks.
Glacial Embrace: Good against water magical attacks.
Pyroshell: Good against fire magical attacks.
For metal and wood magical attacks, use either Glacial Embrace or Pyroshell, depending if you need to regen hp or mp.

Optional: If you are going to kill the same kind of mobs multiple times, which is often the case with quests, you can also adjust your equipment accordingly. I don't think it is worth buying many sets of equipment, but I sometimes get duplicate pieces of equipments as drop that are better against some elements.

3. Get ready

Simply make sure you have a clear escape line where you can run. You don't want to run into other mobs that could aggro on you, so turn the camera in the direction you are going to run, not toward your target. Move slightly out of range to make sure the mob has as much ground as possible to cover before getting to you.

4. Powerful spell

The mob will not aggro until you have completed your first spell, so casting time is not an issue here. I usually cast the spell that will do the most overall damage (whether it is instantaneous or over time), but a spell that stuns or slow the enemy is good also.

5. Fast spell

The next spell must be completed before the mob has the time to get in range to attack you, so casting time is important. Don't wait until your avatar finishes his casting gestures before casting another spell or running away, the spell is casted as soon as the slider is filled.

Suggested spells: Gush, Pyrogram

Optional: make a combo with the first two spells.

6. Run for your life

Run away until you are far enough to safely cast again. I count 5 seconds in my head.

To verify: When I am running uphill or downhill (steep slope), I tend to think it is faster to jump than run, but I have not tested this.

Optional: Scream like a little girl!

7. Rinse and repeat.

Cast a spell, run, cast a spell, run, etc. You will usually cast the same few spells: a few debuffs once in a while to slow your enemy and one or two attack spells depending on their recharge time. Soon, it will be dead.

So, you will use one of the three defense spells, one powerful spell and a few fast casting spells. That kinda shows that you need to specialize in a few spells instead of having lots of less powerful spells. Understanding how to kite increases your ability to judge timing and combo compatability and therefore increases your survivabilty and overall game play technique.
